To dispel the confusion and misunderstanding some fans had regarding the original epilogue, the hay cart scene was dropped and replaced with this new scene on the ZR dvd/blu-ray (2009). This shows that the hay cart scene was not important to the story (i.e. Lelouch was NOT the cart driver). In this epilogue C.C. narrates to the audience and explicitly explains that Lelouch is truly dead. This is no surprise to fans who have been following the show as code theory has been debunked for years. It is contradicted by the anime itself and even Word of God (i.e. the show staff) contradicts it as they've been repeating for years that Lelouch is truly dead.
If you wish to read more about the official statements regarding Lelouch's death or read how and where the anime itself contradicts code theory, read the compilation post on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/user/GeassedbyLelouch/comments/8hklfr/evaluating_code_theory_main_body_index/
As an example, here are the recent tweets from the show creators:
- "Before I started writing the story of a person called Lelouch, I confirmed with Taniguchi-director something. That thing was that THE END OF LELOUCH WILL BE DEATH." - "At least he is aware of his sins and pays for them with HIS DEATH." - "This man called Lelouch will pay for his sins by HIS DEATH. The story follows him till he finally make this decision." - "Probably this Lelouch we see in the first episode of the series wouldn't CHOOSE DEATH. He would try something to avoid it. He couldn't DIE, for Nunnally as well. But we see him changed in the last episode."
